Oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface, comprise 90% of the habitable biosphere, and its ecosystems maintain a delicate biological balance. More than just a resource, the ocean functions as the planet’s primary life-support system: it regulates the global climate, generates oxygen, and serves as a critical carbon sink. The ocean provides vital food security for over 3 billion people, while simultaneously anchoring global trade infrastructure and transporting of over 80% of international goods. All this makes the stability of marine resources fundamentally tied to human survival and socio-economic development.
Despite this profound baseline reliance, traditional business and economic models frequently overlook the operational limits of marine systems, causing overexploitation from industrial fishing and ocean pollution from plastic and toxic waste major issues. The ocean is also intrinsically linked to Climate Change. The unprecedented increase in atmospheric concentration of CO₂ from the use of fossil fuels along with land use change have led to Ocean Acidification, the 7th planetary boundary pushed outside of its Safe Operating Space, back in 2025. Human GHG emissions have altered the ocean’s chemical balance beyond safe historical limits and, right now, the ocean’s ability to maintain its balance is under severe threat.
A harmful feedback loop
The ocean acts as a massive carbon sponge, absorbing roughly 25% to 30% of all human-made CO₂ emissions. While this buffering action has slowed down atmospheric global warming, it comes at a devastating cost to the ocean itself, making it increasingly acidic. As the ocean becomes more acidic, its natural capacity to absorb future CO₂ drops. This creates a dangerous feedback loop that intensifies global climate change, exacerbates biodiversity loss and has major impacts on human well-being.
GHG Emissions-caused acidification, negatively impacts marine ecosystems that are part of complex networks that keep our entire biosphere alive. Acidification drastically reduces the availability of carbonate ions, which oysters, crabs, and corals need to build their shells and skeletons. When small, shell-forming organisms at the base of the food chain decline, it triggers a domino effect that impacts global fisheries and coastal economies.
The latest regulations
To tackle these systemic risks, environmental policy is moving away from voluntary corporate targets and towards legally binding compliance. In December 2022, the UN’s Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was officially adopted. This framework established the “30×30” goal, where parties agreed to effectively work to conserve and sustainably manage at least 30% of the world’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems by 2030. This ambitious goal is one of 23 targets aiming to halt and reverse biodiversity loss this decade.
While the 30×30 target sets the global vision, the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ Agreement) creates a mechanism to establish marine protected areas and enforce strict environmental impact assessments in previously unregulated international waters. This treaty was originally adopted in June 2023 after nearly two decades of talks, but only in late 2025 crossed its mandatory 60-nation ratification threshold, fundamentally altering international ocean governance (UNU). This treaty is aligned with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and with the International Maritime Organization’s MARPOL convention, which restricts shipborne pollution and carbon emissions. Together, these frameworks are disrupting traditional business-as-usual models and building a legal shield against destructive overfishing, deep-sea mining, and industrial runoff.
Ocean Acidification is not the only issue
